General overview of chicory as a potential investment opportunity within Cacadu
In terms of strategic planning documentation as formulated by the Cacadu District Municipality, geographical focus areas have been determined in order to contribute to agricultural development within the area. The determination of these focus areas was informed by physical criteria which impact on the future sustainability of agricultural production, infrastructural efficiency criteria, enterprise concetration and available support systems.
All roasted chicory produced in South Africa is cultivated within a 200 km radius of the town of Alexandria. Chicory SA, located in Alexandria, processes all of the raw chicory produced and is the only processor of chicory in South Africa. The processing plant in Alexandria has been operational for over 50 years.
Although well established in terms of infrastructure, Chicory SA is currently experiencing a shortage in the supply of the raw product. As such opportunities with regards to the production of chicory include:
· Increased chicory production under irrigation or dry land production.
· Re-engineering the marketing of chicory in terms of the raw product and alternative product uses.
Chicory is increasingly finding a place in the consumer market as a unique product with health qualities which makes it a viable investment opportunity within the Cacadu District.
